The first settlers in Springfield, Oregon were James and Susanna Freeman. They arrived on the ships "Oregon" and "Agricola" in 1844. The Freeman family had come from Virginia. James was a lawyer, and Susanna was a seamstress. They started a small farm and raised chickens. In 1847, they moved to what is now the city of Salem. James died in 1849, while Susanna continued to live on the farm until her death in 1907.
