It seems like only yesterday that Sherwood, Oregon was a small town of just over 1,000 residents. Now it's a bustling metropolis with a thriving coffee industry that has lasted for centuries. And while the coffee industry in Sherwood may be older than most, its history is much more intertwined with the history of its neighbors and friends. In fact, one of the earliest commercial Coffee Roasters in Oregon was founded in Sherwood by two men from nearby The Dalles. By 1901, there were more than seventy Coffee Roasters operating in Oregon alone! And while many of these roasters have since left the market (RIP Starbucks), their legacy will never be forgotten. The history of Tactical Coffee begins with three people: Johnnie Cochran Sr., Harry Selway, and Tom Cochran. They were all born and raised in The Dalles and started their own businesses soon after World War II ended. Johnnie Cochran Sr.'s father had been a logger and logger's son who also became an expert at brewing coffee beans - he would later start his own business called The Holmstrom Bros. Coffee Company in 1922. Harry Selway came to Oregon from Seattle after serving in the U.S Army during World War I as an artillery lieutenant colonel; he quickly got involved in the coffee business through his connections to local veterans and businessmen alike (Selway & Sons Brothers Coffee Company opened its doors on Commercial Street NW near Walla Walla). In 1947, Harry Selway passed away suddenly at age seventy-six; his wife kept running the business until her death six years later - she remaindered ownership of the company to her son Tom Selway Jr.. Tom Selway Jr.'s mother died when he was young so he began working day-and-night shifts at his mother's business to support himself as an adult; eventually Coburn bought out Selway Jr.'s share in 1969 and continued running Tactical Coffee under his own name until 1994 when it was purchased by Joe Lubin's new company Lubin's Java House LLC . Since Tactical Coffee first opened its doors less than thirty years ago, it has grown into one of Oregon's leadingcommercial coffee companies - exporting its beans all over the world! Today, Tactical Coffee operates twelve stores across Oregon including five locations located within 100 miles of Portland! Sherwood is a small town in the Columbia River Gorge region of Oregon. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salem-Keizer-Riddleburg micropolitan area. The community was founded in 1877 by settlers from Illinois and Iowa. Merchants and farmers began to arrive in Sherwood in the early 1800s, and it became a frontier town with a strong agricultural economy. By 1899, Sherwood had nine stores, two banks, three churches, and one school. In 1903, Sherman Wagon Wheel Mill closed down due to competition from larger mills in nearby Portland. The mill's former equipment was donated to Sherwood for use as municipal vehicles until 1949 when it was sold to the Oregon Department of Transportation for use as an interchange on State Route 97 between Salem and Keizer. In 1907, Presque Isle Dam opened upuvial sediments along the Columbia River which made farming much more difficult than it had been before. This caused many farmers to move out of Sherwood into other areas in search of better land; however, some continued to live there until after World War II due to its close proximity to industry and resources. After 1945, many new residents moved into Sherwood because of changes taking place throughout America: post-war suburbanization began across major U S cities such as Detroit and Oakland; oil prices crashed during the 1970s; social unrest rocked America during this time period; and most importantly, environmental issues arose with global warming becoming increasingly evident throughout North America over this time frame Today's population has grown rapidly since 2000 due largely to commuting opportunities available in Salem or Keizer (both adjacent municipalities). It was founded in 1881 by John Sherman and his family, who named it for their home Sherwood Forest near Nottingham, England. By 1907, Sherwood had a population of 1,500 people and two schools. In 1912,Sherwood was renamed to honor former US president Grover Cleveland. A large cotton gin was built in 1915 and became one of the first industrial plants in Oregon; it continued operation until it shut down in 1974. Sherwood's economy declined after World War II; however, it has since regained some prominence as a bedroom community for Portland.
