Sherwood is a town in Ashland County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Sherwood was James Biddle in 1864. The post office was established in 1865 and named for John A. Sherwood, an American Civil War soldier and county sheriff. In 1868, A. W. Fuller built a small log cabin on a hill overlooking the town which served as both a hotel and courthouse until it burned down in 1924. In 1902, Harker & Brothers developed a sawmill and millrace that supplied water to Sherwood from the Snake River below. A railroad line ran through Sherwood from 1897 to 1903 but no trains passed through it because of high costs associated with building track across open country without any natural barriers or floodwater protection; this opened up much of central Oregon to settlers byrailroads who could easily purchase land near riverside towns like Bend and Hood River without having to build their own infrastructure (the exception being Portland). After several years of failed attempts by various entrepreneurs to revive the railway line, it finally reopened as the Central Oregon Railway on February 20, 1909 after passing through Sherman Oaks along its original route including access roads cut into hillsides for better staging and approaches onto flat grassy plains bordered by scrub oak forests; this made Sherman Oaks one of the most important rail crossings in central Oregon as goods traveled between Bend and Eugene via Sherman Oaks Ferry Terminal just east of present-day Salem/Sherwood Road junction NIS 35 mile north (1 hour south) of downtown Salem on Lake Oswego Peninsula about 5 miles due west (4 hours east) of where Portland would be located some 50 years later when Interstate 5 was routed downriver). The community was founded in 1849 by Methodists who were driven out of Salem byen Indians. The name comes from the nearby forest where they found logs to build their first church. Sherwood residents have a rich history that can be traced back to when this area was a part of the Willamette Valley and served as a stop on stagecoaches running between Salem and Portland. In 1872, settlers from Hood River County moved into what is now Sherwood and began building log homes. By 1880, most of the town had been built with frame houses and several schools were opened. In 1902, local farmers formed the Oregon Timbermen's Association and started cutting down trees in nearby timberlands for fuel, lumber, shipping crates, and other objects. This drove up demand for lumber in neighboring towns so Sherwood became one of the biggest forestry cities in Oregon. A post office was established at Sherwood in 1903 and remained in operation until 1959; it was then renamed La Grande (a reference to nearby La Grande Lake). The community experienced rapid growth after its establishment as an agricultural center due to its location near major transportation routes and access to markets for goods produced around Bend, Ashland, as well as Medford andPortland. During World War II, many people from outside of Oregon came to work on Army projects such as creating roads throught Southeast Oregon or manufacturing munitions plants deep inside enemy territory; some workers stayed on after hostilities ended to help rebuild their homes countryside A new high school opened in 1958 which soon outgrew its facilities; a auditorium/hall was purchased property adjacent to Highway 97 just east of town Limits during late 1960s-early 1970s which functioned both as primary school gymnasium/auditorium/community center until 2001 when it became home again exclusivelyto students attending Lane Community College .
