Sherwood is a town in Curry County, Oregon, United States. The population was 2,895 at the 2010 census. It has been nicknamed "The Town of Roses" because of its many roses that were grown in the community. The town was founded in 1885 by men from nearby Clearwater and was named for John Sherwood, an early settler. Sherwood is located on Oregon Route 25 about northwest of Salem and east of Grants Pass. The name comes from John Sherwood, who settled there in 1885. He named the community after his home state of Illinois where he had been born in 1845. Sherwood was incorporated as a town on July 1, 1889. In 1905 it became part of the larger city of Grants Pass when that city was organized. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2010, there were 2,895 people residing in the town: 1,072 households (54% with children), 914 families (41% with children), and 588 single-family homes (27% owner-occupied). Of these structures only 4% were used as their primary residence while 94% were rented or leased out during their occupancy;1%. There are no golf courses within reach so most residents take advantage of activities outside Sherwood such as fishing or hiking which occur around other smaller towns closer to Interstate 5 or Salem International Airport
Sherwood was founded in 1881 by John A. Sherwood and his brother, Asa P. Sherwood. The town was named for a grove of trees near the original site of the town. The first post office was established in 1882, and the first store opened in 1883. In 1889, the town received its own school district. In 1905, Sherwood became a city and served as its own mayor from 1903 to 1907 and from 1915 to 1917. In 1929, the city merged with nearby Coeur d'Alene to form that city's second largest municipality.
