The original inhabitants of Salem were Native Americans. The first European to settle in what is now Salem were French fur traders who arrived in 1792 and named the site "La Salle." In 1821, Englishman John McLoughlin established a trading post here and called it "Salem." A group of Mormon missionaries came to Salem in 1847 and founded the First Methodist Church here. In 1859, General James Kenedy led an army against the Confederates during the Civil War and encampments of Mormons near present-day Portland were burned by Union troops. This event became known as "The Burning of Portland." After the war, many new settlers began arriving in western Oregon and some recommended that Salem be renamed after General Kenedy's military victory. The town was officially renamed "Salem" on November 16, 1865. Oregon State University (OSU) was founded in 1885 by Drs. George Huffman and Charles Evans Hughes with land donated by Andrew Lilburne Howard and his wife Rebeca Ladd Harry Kingsbury Lilburne Howard (1824-1902). OSU grew rapidly due to its role as a center for public health research; it now has more than 60,000 alumni nationwide! In 1924, OSU acquired an adjacent farmhouse which served as the first on-campus dormitory for students from Oregon State College–Portland (OSC). In 1941, construction began on Reed Arena which served as both home court for men’s basketball games played at PSU until 1992 and also hosted various other sports events over that period including soccer, baseball & softball tournaments etc.; today it still serves as one half of Reed Arena housing both men’s & women’s basketball games! On October 1st 2009 – over 50 years after its founding – OSU opened its doors once again to all students! Finally “the state university” had returned to campus!!
