The Salem Naval Shipbuilding & Drydock Co. was established in 1852 as a shipyard and dry dock company for the Navy. In 1916, the company became part of the United States Navy and continued to produce warships and other naval vessels until World War II. During that time, Salem Naval Shipbuilding & Drydock Co. produced more than 350 ships for the U.S. Navy alone, including such classic vessels as USS Constitution (CV-4), USS Lexington (CV-2), USS Constitution-class attack submarines USCGC Admiral John C. Stennis (SSN 775) and USS Maine (SSGN 590). In 1991, Salem Fleet Services Corporation was created to manage all aspects of naval shipyard activities and operations at Salem Naval Shipbuilding & Drydock Co., which continues to operate today as a contractor with over 100 employees. The Salem Naval Militia is a volunteer organization made up of sailors from the Portland Naval Shipyard. The group has been in existence since the early 1920s and was one of the first organizations to be organized in Oregon. In 1941, they became part of the Pacific Fleet and stationed in San Francisco Bay Area. From 1951-1957 they were headquartered at Camp Pendleton, California. The naval militia disbanded in 1957 but reformed again in 1980 as part of then-newly created Multinational Force and Security Assistance Force (MNF/SAF). They currently serve as an honor guard for presidents and prime ministers visiting Portland Naval Shipyard.
Salem, Oregon is a small town located in the Wallowa Valley of southern Oregon. The population was 9,825 at the 2010 census. Salem is one of the most important historical and cultural communities in the United States, and has been called "the most historic city in America." The first Europeans to visit Salem were Spanish explorers who journeyed through this area on their way to California in 1776. They named the place San Francisco de la Fe (San Francisco of the Faith) after a bay near Sacramento, California. In 1821, when Captain George Vancouver explored this area for Britain, he also named it San Francisco de los Osos (Haven of Bears). This name stuck because there were many bears living in that part of Oregon at that time. In 1843, two American missionaries settled in Salem as part of a larger religious mission known as Santa Clara del Pacífico (St Augustine's Peninsula). The missionaries had traveled from Missouri through central Oregon to reach this region. They founded what became known as Our Lady's Parish Church on December 12th, 1843. The original church was built on land donated by Govan Creek Indian tribe member James McLoughlin. It served as the parish center until 1906 when a new church was built on its present site. The old church was demolished and replaced with the current building during 1957-1958 renovation project which included adding an addition to the rear and belltower which are still standing today. A fire destroyed much of downtown Salem on December 15th1984; however, due to donations by individuals and businesses throughout town $20 million was raised within five months to rebuild much of what had been lost including much of City Hall & Courthouse complex including new jail cells & library wing On July 8th2000 Salems last streetcar pulled into service followed by final bus stop at SW Thurston Street

Salem, Oregon is a city in Polk County, Oregon, United States. The population was 10,592 at the 2010 census. Salem is the fourth most populous city in Oregon and the most populous city east of the Cascades. Salem's economy depends on commerce and services. Salem is considered an historic town because of its many historical events and buildings that have been preserved or are still standing. The name "Salem" comes from a place called Salinambeki (Swedish: "Pfarrholm"), meaning "farmstead by the Salina River." In 1810, Jedediah Smith exploredthe area around present-day Salem while journeying through what is now Polk County and named it after his friend Elijah Porter's home state of New York City—a decision that may have been influenced by John Quincy Adams' visit to Portland in 1811 as part of his explorations for U.S. Rep. Thomas Benton (D-MO). Soon afterwards James Kapplin founded a trading post at present day Portsmouth on Mud Creek about two miles south of present day Salem; he called it Kapplin's Fort . In 1817, George Stephenson built a steamboat dockage at Portsmouth from which he transported goods upriver to Portland via Willamette River rapids; this connection allowed for easy transportation of goods between Portland and Vancouver County during those early days before wagon trains arrived in later years. When first mentioned in1841, Salem was 3½ miles upstream from where Portsmouth sat then just above low water mark on the Willamette River due to flooding caused by heavy rains during winter season; however, by 1850 there had grown 12 businesses along high water mark producing manufactures such as lumber, shipbuilding timber & riverboats etc., now known as core industrial areas (eastern edge), commercial districts (western edge) with ecclesiastical district located near downtown area today including Federal Building/Marketing District located east side Main Street/Block F
Salem was founded in 1847 by the Donation of lands to the United States by President James K. Polk. The town was named for Salem, Massachusetts, where Puritan refugees from England had settled in 1692. The first post office was established in 1848 and the first store opened in 1850. In 1854, the Oregon Territory was created and Salem became its capital. The saloon-baronet John Fetterman ran what is nowOregon State University from a room on Capitol Hill until 1860 when he moved to a house on Third Street. In 1864, Salem hosted the Centennial Exposition which showcased American inventions and technologies such as railroad tracks and telegraphs.
