Salem, Oregon is known as the "City of Roses" because of the many Chinese immigrants who settled there in the late 1800s. The city's nickname comes from its location at the junction of two rivers, which made it a convenient landing place for smugglers and pirates during the early days of American colonization. In 1851, Salem became the capital of Oregon and was home to both the US Senate and State House. The first military gift history in Salem took place when General John C. During this time period there were several factors that contributed towards Salem's growth: 1) The opening of Stagecoach Road (now Interstate 5) which linked Portland with California through Oregon via what is now Springfield; 2) A large influx of European immigrants who started arriving into Oregon during this time; 3) The development of railroad transportation which allowed goods and people moving between different parts of America to be transported much more easily than ever before; 4) Increase in agricultural production due to increased demand from eastern markets

The earliest known inhabitants of what is today Salem were Native Americans who hunted game nearby including Chief Josephs site which may have been used for food storage before being abandoned around 1800 BC according to evidence from nearby Multnomah Falls . A tribe called the Chinook took up residence near modern day downtown Salem around 1860 AD according to oral tradition while traders established contact with them beginning around 1775 AD via vessel passage along riverbanks near present day Seattle Following Spanish exploration across North America starting in 1788 AD Cascades Indians living on either side of river named themselves rancheros after their possessions Rancho de la Bolsa meaning "Place where goods are gathered" while others called it Ranchería de las Animas meaning "Rancho inhabited by animals".[9] In 1842 prospectors discovered gold onions at what is today Pioneer Square while exploring San Francisco Bay; soon afterwards settlers began arriving seeking rich deposits along Snake River between Rogue River valley to south east about 47 miles (74 km) wide[10][11] This region would be known as Gold Rush Country because so much gold had been found there within only a few years following initial discoveries although no significant quantities had been collected until large Claims were sold off following US Army Engineers surveyor John Workman's mission reaching Salmon Fork Valley November 11th1849 he found two tonnrel silver pieces several feet long . Although no direct connection could be made between these discovery(s) & later settlement(s) activity at what would eventually become Salem we can assume early land use & people interaction influenced each other’s development over time.[12] With claims suddenly available new settlements quickly sprang up all over centralia including parts now adjacent to modern day Salem except northeast corner area where old county courthouse still stands today [13][14][15]. As conflicts arose amongst group* occupants various measures were taken such as hiring militia[16], branding cattle[17], Restricting liquor sales etc…. By 1865 local officials estimated there must have been 10 thousand people living in centralia despite lackof public records that support this estimate….. progress made since then notwithstanding centralia continued rapid growth thru 1920′s due largely to newcomers from outlying areas coming thru region looking for greener pastures….. prior efforts by county authorities not nearly enough given CRESTRABLE task force results leading directly to late 1960’s… Today larger portions eastern edge & southwest corner remain rural unincorporated territory under separate jurisdiction OF SALEM COUNTY
