The Marine detachment in Salem, Oregon was activated on October 7th 1951. The Marines were stationed at the Naval Air Station Lemoore and served as a unit of the Department of the Navy. They deployed to Japan in 1954 and Korea in 1955. In 1956 they Detachment sailed to South America for Operation "Puerto Rico". The detachment spent two months performing security duty at an air base in Trinidad before sailing back to San Diego on July 25th 1957.

In 1839, James Kapp founded the Klamath Agency on this site and began selling saltwater fishing rights to settlers. In 1846, Salem's first post office was established when David Waddell sent a wagonload of goods from Portland to sell at the Klamath Agency. By 1870, Salem had a theater and several stores. The early years of the 20th century were difficult for Salem because it didn't have any railroad connections and couldn't compete with other towns in terms of economic development. But by 1925, Salem had opened its own school system and started to grow rapidly again. Today, Salem is one of the most vibrant communities in Oregon with a rich cultural heritage that has been influences by both Native Americans and European settlers alike. Its downtown district is home to two theaters along with several shops, restaurants, bars and nightlife options like The Slice bar & grill or First Friday nights at The Brickyard Pub & Grill. There are also plenty of events happening throughout each year such as Pumpkinfest or Oktoberfest which add an extra layer of excitement to what can be an otherwise sleepy town!

The history of Salem began with two small towns near what is now downtown Salem, each established around 1875 as wagon trains traveled through the area on their way to Milwaukie and then Portland. In 1907, Salem became an independent city when it seceded from Multnomah County.
