Salem, Oregon has a long and rich coffee history. The first Coffee Kamp was opened in 1901 by Dutchman Cornelius De Jong. The business grew rapidly, and Dejong founded two more Coffee Kamp stores in 1903 and 1904. In 1906, the company became known as the Java Coffee Company after its first purchase of Java beans from an Indonesian plantation. By 1912, Java Coffee had become one of the world's leading coffee companies. In 1915, Salem's first roastery opened on Commercial Street near downtown. It was run by Eugene Kramer and his wife Bernice Kramer. At that time, Salem was a small town with only a handful of businesses - including The Java Coffee Company - accounting for most of the economic activity within its boundaries. However, despite this limitation on Salem's economic development, the Kramer roasters continued to produce high-quality coffee until their closure in 1978. During World War II, Salem became home to America's first cooperative manufacturing plant for chocolate products – the Chocolate Corporation of America (CCA). CCA produced Thousands of boxes of chocolate bars at various locations throughout Salem during World War II – manyof which remain today as relics of our city’s pastime industry! After World War II ended, many Salem businesses closed or changed hands; however, four remaining Kramer roasters – Boston Dark Roast (BDR), Breakfast Blend (BB), Peet's 100% Arabica (PEC), and Pecan Pie Central (PPC) – continued production until 1978 when they all merged into fabricators PTB Corporation which then went out of business in 1984! These days there are just two BDR collectives left operating: One located in Hartford CT and another at George Mason University where it is open to visitors! There are also numerous other legacy brands associated with Salem such as Mr.'s Organic Grocery & Café; First Christmastime Grocery; Olde English Creameries Incorporated; TheJavaCoffee Co.; New England Coffeeshop Association; etc.) But it is really about those four original Kramer roasters who continue to define what fresh roasted coffee tastes like today!
