The Salem Coast Guard gift history began in 1923 when a group of friends from Portland, Oregon pooled their resources and donated two small sailboats to the local coast guard. The first Coast Guard vessel was named “The Lady Grant” after Captain George Grant who served as Commandant of the Coast Guards from 1923-1941. In 1951, the Coast Guard purchased “The Mary J. Blanchard” which served as the flagship for many years until she was destroyed by fire in 1985. The next year, in 1986, they acquired “The John F Kennedy” which served as the flagship until she was replaced by “The George Washington” in 1995. In 2001, they purchased “The USS Constitution” which is now homeported at Newport Beach, California. Today, Salem's Coast Guard Gift History includes over 60 vessels that have been donated or leased to them by individuals and businesses across Oregon and Northern California since 1923. These boats provide livelihoods for coast guard personnel and support law enforcement patrols on both state and federal waters. The United States Coast Guard was founded on May 29, 1915 by the Congress under the National Defense Act. The Coast Guard is the first and only Federal agency in the United States with a permanent coast guard service. The original purpose of the Coast Guard was to provide security on America's coasts during World War I. After war, it became an all-volunteer organization and went into service in 1922. The Coast Guard's mission has since grown to include exercises and operations around the world as well as preventing maritime disasters. In 1990, after being redesignated as a Service Component of Homeland Security, the Coast Guard began providing emergency response services within New York City for Mayor Rudy Giuliani. Since then, our efforts have expanded to include services such as search and rescue along with law enforcement protection ashore and afloat.Today, there are over 12 thousand men and women working for the Coast Guard across fifty states and Washington D.C.. We operate more than 440 ships including Cutters (LHDs), Cutters Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) & Kayaks (CGKs), Helicopters (H-1Bs & HH-60 Pave Hawks), Vehicles (ATVs, UAVs & hovercraft),and air assets including One Island Patrol Squadron(IPS)& Northern Mariana Islands Station(NMIS). A total of $48 billion has been invested in equipment since 1994 which has kept our coastline safe from potential harm while also creating jobs throughout coastal communities!

Salem, Oregon is an unincorporated community in Clackamas County, Oregon, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Clackamas River and within the city of Salem. The town was founded by farmers in 1878 as a small agricultural settlement near the confluence of the Willamette and Clackamas rivers. Interest in starting a town grew when a railway was built to link Portland with Salem through the region in 1886. By 1890, Salem had become known as one of Oregon's leading towns for its unique architecture and cultural attractions. In 1896, Salem became part of the new state of Oregon when it was divided from Washington Territory. Over time, Salem began to lose importance as Oregon's largest city until it regained this title in 2002 when Portland annexed most of what used to be Salem's eastern edge. Today, much of what made Salem so appealing has been lost to development or redevelopment – but its archives and history remain largely intact. In particular, there are several important local museums including the Olney Museum of Art (founded in 1897), which specialises in American art; The Arts Club (founded 1935), which provides public access to works by Northwest artists; and The Historical Society (founded 1912), which preserves historical materials from throughout Oregon and beyond.
