The Salem Air Force Base was founded on July 29, 1947. The base is located in the city of Salem, Oregon and it is one of the largest airfields in the United States. The base has a total area of 1,433 acres and it is home to over 7,000 military personnel and civilians. The base also houses a number of aircraft and other equipment. The first units stationed at Salem Air Force Base were the 9th Bombardment Wing which was activated on October 15, 1947. The wing was composed of three squadrons: the 514th General Support Squadron (later redesignated as the 615th), the 701st Attack Squadron (later redesignated as the 702nd) and the 810th Intelligence Squadron (later redesignated as the 811th). Additionally, two detachments were established at nearby Wright-Patterson AFB: one detachment operated an experimental Boeing B-29 Superfortress bomber squadron known as "The Raiders" while another detachment provided support for aerial refueling operations with Douglas DC-3s. As time passed, new units were added to SalemAirForceBase including: On September 17, 1951, Headquarters USAF activated XX Bomber Command which consisted of eight wings/groups consisting of Fifteenth Air Force (14 AF) elements numbered XII through XVI each; these groups being assigned to four operational commands namely First Tactical Fighter Group (TFG 1), Second Tactical Fighter Group (TFG 2), Third Tactical Fighter Group (TFG 3) and Ninth Tactical Fighter Wing (9TW). TFGs were commanded by Major General Carl Spaatz who had replaced General Curtis LeMay on May 20 following his retirement from command due to health problems caused by alcoholism. HQ USAF concurrently activated Headquarters Eighth Air Forces on November 16 under Major General Hoyt Vandenberg Jr., Commander in Chief Pacific Ocean Areas who became operational control for all USAAF forces in contaminated areas east of Japan after World War II ended. On December 13 HQ USAFactivated VIII AF's subordinate headquarters Far East Air Forces which was made up essentially of Tenth Army Group Headquarters components from Sixth Army Groups located along Taiwan's peninsular coast - this organization would later become CENTCOM when VI became operational 10 Mar 1957 when IXAF disbanded effective 31 Dec 1964 due to its own organizational changes during that period reflecting newly acquired knowledge about Vietnam War developments since its establishment nearly six months earlier! Salem was founded by the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1805. The town was named for General Samuel Osgood, who had served as a colonel on the expedition. The first permanent settler in Salem was David Dudley Moody, who arrived in 1827. In 1836, Salem became the capital of Oregon.
