In Salem, Oregon, the United States Air Force has a rich history of deploying gift baskets to celebrate military and cultural events. There are also special occasions such as Christmas where gift baskets become an important part of celebrating this holiday season. In 2007, when Gifts For Warriors was created as a way for members of the military community to donate time and money specifically towards providing Christmas gifts for service members stationed abroad, it was through Gift Baskets that the air force became involved. Salem, Oregon is a small town located in the Southeastern US. The population of Salem was 9,848 at the 2010 census. In 1821, settlers from Salem founded the town on land that was donated by Colonel Philip Wiggin to the community. The name "Salem" came about because of a trade route running through the area and its abundance of pitch pine forests. The first school in Salem was built in 1827 and classes began every day at 7:00am. A log schoolhouse stood until 1865 when a new brick building was erected on North Main Street. By 1840, Salem had five schools and over 100 residents. The brick library building was built in 1895 and served as the town's library until it burned down in 1922. One of Salem's most famous residents is Joseph Warren who served as an influential justice on the United States Supreme Court during the 19th century (see American Revolution). During World War II, Salem played an important role as one of sixteen towns within Washington State that contributed troops to support hostilities against Nazi Germany. The local paper mills were turned into munitions factories and more than 1,500 jobs were created during wartime production; however, many of these workers lost their jobs after 1945 when industry transitioned to print-only technologies

In 1935, Salem began construction of the Oregon State Capitol building, which remains the centerpiece of the town today.
