The United StatesArmy has a rich history dating back to the Revolutionary War. In 1846, when Oregon became part of the United States, the army was organized into three Regular and two Militia brigades. The first U.S. military post in Oregon was Fort Hall on the Columbia River. In 1851, the first regiment of volunteers from Roseburg, Oregon raised for service in Kansas against Mexico was mustered into service at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas as Company H (7th Infantry). The 7th Infantry returned home in November 1851 and were re-mustered into service as Company I (9th Infantry) on January 1, 1852 at Yuma County Courthouse in Roseburg. Companies I and K were consolidated on February 14, 1854 at Fort Douglas near present day Portland. In 1861, General James Kapp ordered all volunteer units northward to join his forces marching forWashington D.C.. On July 15th 1862 Companies A-J of 9th Infantry left their stations at Yuma County Courthouse for Walla Walla where they joined up with Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee under command of Major General Jubal Early. 1st Brigade: 1st Regiment Missouri Volunteer Cavalry 2nd Brigade: 3rd Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry 3rd Brigade: 10th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry 4th Brigade: 2nd Battalion Vermont Volunteers (2nd Dragoons) 5th Brigade: 9th Regiment Indiana Veteran Infantry 6th brigade: 10*Regiment Maine Volunteer Infantry (10/12ths) On Christmas Day 1862 Captain John Fenton commanding Company G led his men down Snake River Valley to relieve Captain Augustus Griggs's unit which had been pushed back by Confederate cavalry including General Jubal Early's 2nd Battalion Vermont Volunteers under Lieutenant Colonel Solomon Northrup east of Enterprise on December 26 1862 while company G guarded a bridge over the Snake River below Enterprise while artillery bombarded Confederate positions nearby; this relieved Griggs'sunit that had been force marched almost 150 miles through intense cold weather without food or rest and arrived too late for Fenton's unit which reached its destination safely about midnight December 27 1862 after routing several hours long Confederate pursuit; A detachment from VtVolunteer company C also participated in this action along side Captains John Marchand and George Ledyard’s companies of infantry from Placer County California during these operations Lieutenant Colonel Northrup’s battalion repulsed all attacks by Rebel Horsemen until nightfall December 27 1862 northeast of Enterprise
