Redmond, Oregon is a city of about 100,000 people located on the Microsoft campus in Redmond. The city is home to two coffee shops – The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf and Old Mill Coffee House. These three businesses are responsible for bringing small batch coffee to the community. The first small batch coffee shop opened in 1974 in a former car dealership on NE 82nd Street. This business was owned by Jay Lynch and operated out of his home. The second small batch coffee shop, also in NE 82nd Street, opened in 1984 under the name “Coffee Connection”. It was run by Dick Kappelbach and his wife Linda. In 1992, Mike Metzger founded Old Mill Coffee House (now known as The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf) on SE Powell Boulevard near King College Campus in Redmond. This business began as an impromptu stop on the way to work forMetzger, who worked at Seattle-based Pacific Northwest Data Group at that time. The Metzers started buying beans fromsmall roasters throughout Washington State before opening their own roast shop few years later – giving customers more control over their coffees than found at most grocery stores at that time! Today, Old Mill sources all of its beans from small roasters from around the world! Today’s small batch coffee scene is much different than it was 25 years ago when these three businesses opened their doors! In fact, many of today’s top roasters (including Twin Cities Coffee Roasters, Peet’s Coffee & Tea Company, Blind Monk Brewery) were not established until after these three cafes closed down! However, there are still some great microbreweries operating within walking distance of any one of these participating businesses!
