Redmond, Oregon was founded in 1879 by George Redmond and his wife Christina. The city became a U.S. city on February 14, 1959. It was named after Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, who also founded the software company there in 1975. Redmond is home to Microsoft's headquarters as well as a variety of businesses including Amazon Web Services and Sound Transit. In addition to its role as an important center for technology industry, Redmond is also known for its annual Christmas parade which attracts over 100,000 people each year.
Redmond, Oregon was founded on December 14, 1859 by John Redmond and his wife Anna. The town was named after the Red River which flows through the area. The first settler in Redmond was James McMillan who arrived in 1851. In 1862, a post office called Redmond was established and operated until 1870. The town grew rapidly and by 1865 it had a population of 100 people. There were no schools in Redmond until 1872 when a school building was erected and served as the town's basic municipal government for three years. In 1875, a new courthouse was built and served as the primary court house for about 20 years before it burned down in 1886. The town continued to grow slowly until it reached its peak population of 300 people in 1907 when all of its businesses were closed due to economic decline. However, Redmond experienced significant growth during World War I with the influx of soldiers and their families which drove the population up to 500 people by 1918. After the war ended, there were few opportunities for business development so most of the residents moved out oftown or left altogether. By 1930, only 10% of the original population remained in Redmond while 90% lived outside of it on adjacent properties.[1]
