The station served as a port of call for ships traveling between Puget Sound and the Columbia River. In 1824, Captain George Vancouver founded the town of Port Orchard on Bainbridge Island and began providing services to the town. In 1851, Captain James Wickersham founded a new coast guard station at Yelm and continued providing services to Yelm until 1861 when he resigned from his position due to ill health. In 1865, Captain John Atherton established a new coast guard station at Bellingham and continued providing services to Bellingham until 1969 when it was discontinued due to budget cuts. From 1870-1914, the Coast Guard stationed stationed at Issaquah Bay during the winter months due to its proximity to Seattle. In 1915, Seattle became an incorporated city and the Coast Guards discontinued their service at Issaquah Bay; however, they continue operate three small airports located within Seattle: SeaTac Airport (SEA), Boeing Field (BAJ), and Fauntleroy Airport (FKU). Beginning in 1951, there were also stations established along Oregon’s coastline- located at Bend (ORB), Hood River (HRD), Depoe Bay (DBY), Seaside Heights (SHP) – serving as staging points for search and rescue operations during periods of high weather activity along Oregon’s coastline. Redmond, Oregon is a city in the U.S. state of Oregon and the county seat of Douglas County. The population was 97,302 at the 2010 census, making it the second largest city in Douglas County after Portland. The university District contains several hospitals and medical research institutions as well as many small businesses that support local employment levels. Redmond, Oregon was founded in 1851 by James W. Redmond and his wife Sally. The city is named after James W. Redmond, who donated the land for the city. Redmond was first known as a small town on the edge of what is now Highway 97. In 1855, the town reorganized and became an incorporated municipality with a population of 100. Two years later, it received a railroad connection and began to grow rapidly. In 1861, Redmond annexed part of nearby Oregon City due to its growth and its contributions to both communities. The annexation made Redmond one of the most populous cities in Oregon at that time.
