Redmond, Oregon is a city in the U.S. state of Oregon, located on the Willamette River. The population was 56,633 at the 2000 census. Redmond is one of the most significant cities in Northwest Oregon and has been home to many famous people including Forrest Gump and Michael Jordan. The first European settlers in what would become Redmond were French missionaries who arrived in 1846. They named their land "Nootka", after Captain Cook's sighting of Vancouver Island off the coast of British Columbia in 1792. When gold was discovered at Gold Rush creek near present-day Bellevue, Washington, prospectors turned east to find new goldfields around Redmond as early as 1855. In 1861 local entrepreneur David Crippen organized a group of men to purchase 1,200 acres (500 ha) along Duck Creek from John Silliman for $4 per acre ($75/$1,000). This became Crippen Ranch which later grew into Redmond Ranch National Monument Preserve which covers an area of 85 square miles (220 km2). In 1865–1866 James Bidwell homesteaded 11 acres (4 ha) on what is now Everett Street near present-day Union Station; he called it Bidwell Heights because he had found silver ore there while working for US Mining and Manufacturing Company scout leader Jethro Gibbs during his wanderings through northeastern Oregon during the mid-19th century revival period that followed American Gold Rush discoveries elsewhere in North America. It should be noted that this locality contemporary with today's Redmond did not yet exist when these events took place! Today Bidwell Heights still stands some distance away from downtown Redmond but its presence can be felt throughout much of today's metropolitan area due to its extensive restoration work completed over several decades by volunteers associated with Friends Meeting House Committee – founded by Reverend William Bainbridge – whose property lay just east of where Bidwell once stood: included among those recent landmarks are two restored circa 1840 log cabin houses on NE Everett St., adjacent to Friends' Meeting House property now used as apartments by students at nearby Reed College; both buildings have been placed on the National Register of Historic Places []. As mining dwindled and other investments failed to materialize following World War II all but one freedman living on Reach farm northwest of downtown Bend went out into circulation during that time frame also becoming farmers themselves creating immense wealth within short order especially thanks to irrigation systems they’d developed accompanying their farming endeavors—a process complete even before any public or private money was invested…During this same era a large number Hawthorne Blvd homes also got built starting about 1945 housing workers employed by Iuka Works Aluminum smelting operations located across SE Hawthorne Boulevard just south/west of SW Park Ave.; huge quantities were brought here via truckloads daily until quite recently when access restrictions stopped trucks going straight up Hawthorne Blvd heading directly towards Iuka works stopping instead at SW Park Ave., resulting in an appreciable piles up at SW corner lot formerly occupied by Iuka works main access road leading thereto—an interesting historical footnote given current day plans for redevelopment incorporating portions now part open space parkland &fw side lots owned by Univision Portland Inc.—such as currently facing NE Hawthorne Blvd site w/ large visitor center proposed occupying much former aluminum smelter yards bordering NW side lot & providing excellent views toward PSU campus just east—the project remains under construction (&ng ongoing) .
