The marines have been deployed in many places around the world andPortland is no different. As a city, Portland has always been home to Marines who have served here. The marines have come and gone but their gift history remains. In 1881, the first marine detachment was stationed in Portland. This detachment was made up of soldiers from California and they arrived to help with the acquisition of land needed for shipbuilding in Oregon. They also helped to establish an agricultural economy in the area. From 1886-1892, there were three detachments stationed in Portland: one from New York, one from Massachusetts, and one from Rhode Island. These detachments came ashore to help build a navy base at Astoria and support other military activities throughout Oregon. In 1897-1901, four more detachments were sent here: two from California (the First Battalion), one from Nevada (the Second Battalion), and one from Colorado (the Third Battalion). These detachments were used for various purposes such as patrolling the coastline, participating in military exercises, providing medical care for troops on maneuvers, and supporting local businesses during times of economic recession or drought. In 1923-1925 there was only one detachment left: Marine Barracks #1 which consisted of officers only while Marine Barracks #2 was used by sailors for their barracks needs while Marine Barracks #3 functioned as an armory until it closed its doors in 1951 due to budget cuts caused by World War II policies that targeted America’s naval forces instead of her military allies like Japan who had fallen into conflict with Europe after being defeated at war’s end). During WWII Marines manned some of America’s most sensitive ports including those located along our Pacific coast where enemy submarines could launch attacks against our shores undetected; these Ports are now known as “Marine Corps Beaches” .
