At first, the Portland Army National Guard was a militia organization. However, in 1863, it became an infantry regiment of the United States army and served in the Mexican-American War. The unit participated in engagements at Palo Alto and Cerro Gordo. After the war, the Portland Army National Guard became part of the Regular army and fought in various campaigns including American Civil War (1861-1865) and World War I (1914-1918). In 1919, it was merged with other Oregon units to form the Oregon National Guard. During World War II (1939-1945), Portland's military unit served in both Pacific theaters as well as Europe. At its peak,Portland had over 2,000 soldiers active duty with its brigade headquarters divided into three battalions. In recent years, some members of Portland's military unit have retired or been honorably discharged from service while others have joined reserves or national guard units elsewhere within Oregon or California. Nevertheless, all members of Portland's regimental male battalion are currently assigned to federal service through their respective branch offices located here in Multnomah County where they enjoy numerous benefits such as job security and medical care not typically available to civilians stationed abroad on active duty for any length of time.

The first U.S. military installation in Portland was Fort George Wright on the Willamette River in 1846. The first regiment of cavalry was raised at Fort Wright in 1846 and moved to Portland, where it served until 1861. Portland’s role as a commercial center during the antebellum period gave rise to an army garrisoned there that became known as "Fort Benton." In 1850, the city hosted its own artillery battery, which contributed to its nickname of " GUNSVILLE ." After Oregon became a state in 1889, the army moved out of Portland and replaced it with a national guard post known as Fort Benson . In 1907, Mayor Eugene S. Curtis leased from General John T. Sherman an acre of land at NW 9th Avenue and Morrison Street for use as an Army training ground for Infantry and Artillery recruits. The lease lasted until 1915 when the armament training school closed because of World War I . On July 1, 1916, 15 years after Oregon joined the Union as a state, the federal government abandoned plans to create an armored force stationed in Portland due to budgetary constraints . In 1919-1920 construction began on what is nowPDX Place near Interstate 5 so thatarmy personnel could live and train while awaiting mobilization . On September 3rd 1920 Major General Charles Kapp relieved Colonel John Crayton commandship of First Cavalry Division at PDX Place after Crayton's unhappy experiences leading his division during World War I ; this left command responsibility for First Cavalry Division vacant . On November 12th 1920 Brigadier General Clarence Wickersham assumed command over First Cavalry Division from Major General Charles Kapp; this change left command responsibility for all cavalry divisions vested in brigadier generals rather than colonel generals like before .
