Pendleton's Police Department has been providing quality service to the community for over 60 years. The department is one of the oldest in Oregon, and it was founded in 1892. Today, Pendleton's police officers provide essential services to the community through their work with law enforcement and public safety. The history of the Pendleton Police Department can be traced back to 1892 when a group of men from Pendleton decided to form a law enforcement agency. They named their organization "police," after the French word for peace officer. The first members of the police department were sworn in on October 10th, 1892. At that time, Pendleton only had two buildings- a jail and an old schoolhouse. The early years of the police department were difficult ones. There was little money available to fund new programs or purchase equipment. However, thanks to donations from local citizens, the department started receiving some basic supplies such as uniforms and radios in 1917. In 1922, they acquired their first vehicle- a Ford Model T patrol car1! The days of prohibition were tough on law enforcement in Oregon. However, due to donations received from local businesses, the police department was able to purchase several rifles and shotguns in 19342! The following year saw another important milestone for the police department- they became accredited by National Organization for Public Safety3! This allowed them to receive training from leading experts in order to improve their service4! In 19515, a new building was constructed on North Main Street within sight of downtown Pendleton5! This building served as our current headquarters until 19786!. During this time period7%, we made significant progress towards becoming one of Oregon's top law enforcement agencies8!. In 19789%, our team underwent an intense remodeling which included new equipment including riot gear10!. We are grateful for all that has come since then11! In 1912, the department moved from its original building on 10th Avenue to a new one at 14th Street and Oregon Avenue in Pendleton. The current building opened in 1938 and is home to the departments detective bureau, evidence storage, police station, and library.
Pendleton, Oregon is a small town in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. It is located about an hour north of Portland and has a population of around 8,000 people. Pendleton is known for its arts and culture, as well as its natural beauty. The town was founded in 1877 by James Pendleton and his wife Mary Ann Pendleton. The Pendletons were originally part of the Methodist Church, but they left that organization in 1885 to join the Presbyterian Church. Today, most of the people in Pendleton are affiliated with the United Methodist Church or the Protestant Episcopal churches. The first settlers in what is now Pendleton were farmers who arrived from eastern Washington State during the mid-19th century. In 1877, James Pendleton founded the town on land he had purchased from David Brewer and others near Mount Hood Dam. At first, there was only one house in town; later buildings were erected on Lots 1 and 2 (now Jackson Street and Broadway). James Pendleton was an influential figure in early Oregon history. He served as mayor of Portland twice (1883-1885) and as a member of the Oregon General Assembly (1887-1889). He also owned several thousand acres of land that became part of what is now Bendigo County. After moving to Pendleton fromPortland in 1887, James pendleton devoted himself to developing his new community into a successful agricultural society. His son Archibald Peddleton ranpendletontown until his death in 1951 at age 81 years old

By 1907 the population had reached 1,500 people. During World War II, Pendleton was one of the largest military camps in Oregon with over 5,000 men employed in production at three munitions plants and 10 other businesses. After the war ended, the economy declined quickly due to decline in military production and an increase in highway travel throughout Oregon. The population decreased to 900 by 1990; however, there has been recent growth (2006 estimate: 1,100) as residents move into nearby neighborhoods such as Hillsboro and Beaverton.
