Today's downtown contains many businesses including Macy's Department Store which opened its doors in 1912 and was once considered one ofPortland's most important landmarks. Other notable businesses include Joes Pizza (opened 1904), Aldus Hodge Hardware (1891), Bicknells Brewery (1888) and Stroudsburg Brewing Company (1906). The entertainment industry has also been an important part of Pendleton life over the years with several stages being erected alongMain Street such as Ollie Farber Theater (opened 1924), Silver Fox Ballroom (opened 1935) and Regal Cinemas(opening 1974). In recent years there have been efforts to revive Main Street by painting it white or banning streetlights from entire blocks - this idea has met resistance from some residents who feel that this would detract from the character of Pendleton's historic buildings

Pendleton is a small town in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 909 at the 2010 census. Pendleton is located on the banks of the Willamette River and has a history dating back to 1847. The first permanent settler in what is now Pendleton was John Wesley Powell, who arrived in 1847 and named it after his friend and mentor, General George Armstrong Custer. The town's first store opened in 1849 and its first school was built in 1850. For many years Pendleton had a ferry service between the town and Vancouver Island which allowed goods from Portland to be transported downriver to Pendleton customers. In 1861, the U.S. Army established Fort Douglas at nearby Coos Bay for use as a military post during the Civil War. The fort gradually fell into disrepair over time and was abandoned by 1862; however, it continued to serve as an agricultural center until 1903 when it closed completely due to budget cuts by then-President Theodore Roosevelt. In 1903, Pendleton residents voted to create their own school district which would eventually becomeMultnomah County Schools District #1 (MCD #1). As part of this decision, municipal officials donated land adjacent to Main Street north of town for a new high school that would serve as the district's main campus until 1974 when MCD #2 (now known as OSU Beaverton) opened on that site. The growth of Pendleton during the 20th century saw much development including: * The opening of Interstate 5 in 1964 which brought increased traffic and commerce into town; * The completion of Oregon Route 26 in 1968 which connected Bendigo with Portland; * Development around University Boulevard beginning in the early 1970s which helped give Pendleton its current name; * A large expansion of Multnomah County government beginning inthe early 1990s resulting in more services being offered within reach of residents;
