Pendleton, Oregon is a small town located in the Willamette Valley of Oregon. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. Pendleton is the county seat of Deschutes County and has a small airport. The town was founded in 1877 by John Pendleton, who homesteaded land near what is now downtown Pendleton. The first post office in Pendleton opened in 1879. In 1898, Pendleton became an incorporated city and remained so until it merged with Eugene on January 1, 1998. Today, Pendleton is largely residential with a few businesses scattered throughout the central business district. The history of Pendleton can be traced back to 1877 when John Pendleton came to the area from Illinois looking for land to farm and build his home on. He soon realized that he had found something special since his property lay just outside of what is now downtownpendleton. From this site, John started developing his community into one of today's most vibrant cities with its own police department and fire department as well as schools and churches all within walking distance of one another. Not only did John establish himself as an entrepreneur here but also built up some amazing infrastructure such as a water main system and streetlights that still work today! In 1898, when Portland dissolved into two municipalities-Municipal District No 5 (Eugene) and Municipal District No 9 (Portland)-Pendleton became part of Municipal District No 4 (Deschutes County). This made sense because Deschutes County was primarily agricultural with very few industry or commercial establishments; thus, it would have been difficult for either municipality to include all of the residents within their boundaries without doing so formally which would have caused tension between both groups/communities. As it turned out, this didn't happen and instead both communities continued to function autonomously under their own leaderships until they merged on January 1st 1998 becoming one consolidated community known as "Pendletons". Today's pendletons are some of the most active citizens in their community; they contribute greatly to Both sides of City Hall where they serve as elected officials representing all aspects of their hometown including Police Department Chief & Fire Chief among others key positions!
