Oregon City, Oregon is a city located in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 54,751 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Multnomah County and the third-largest city in Oregon after Portland and Eugene. Oregon City grew up around the Willamette River and its tributaries. In 1847, John McLoughlin founded what would become Oregon City on land he bought from Chief Joseph of the Yakama Nation. After years of growth and development by local entrepreneurs, voters adopted a resolution establishing an urban center in 1915 to promote trade with nearby Seattle. The first residents of Oregon City were families from Seattle who had moved to Multnomah County to take advantage of cheap land prices here. In 1922, territorial authorities decided that Multnomah County should be divided into two parts: one for Seattleites and another for residents of Portland. As a result of this decision, many people living near Portland began moving westward to get away from the jurisdiction of Seattle. This migration led to an increase in traffic problems between those two cities – which led to efforts by locals to create a new regional government that would address these issues. In 1924,Multnomah County passed a resolution declaring itself without boundaries so long as it remained "the unincorporated community within [multnomah] county" like it had been before 1914.
