But Fort Rosecrans remained an important defensive base for Oregon City until it was destroyed by fire in 1883; thereafter only cannons could be fired from within Fort Rosecrans itself without importuning permission from higher authorities Aftermath: The post-war years saw renewed development in downtown OregonCity thanks largely to Scandinavian immigrants who arrived during this period seeking work opportunities in what was then a staunch Republican stronghold . In addition to commerce and education opportunity seekers came entrepreneurs such as Danish immigrant Ole Hansen who opened an ice cream parlor on SW 3rd Avenue in 1865; grocer Jens Olsen who opened his own grocery store on NW Broadway two years later; entrepreneur Lars Christensen who opened a millinery shop at NW Fourth Avenue; banker John Buellsfeldt whose family ran several businesses including a brewery before he became mayor in 1903 In 1905 local ranchers banded together against city taxes they felt were unfairly assessed against them while working towards creating their own county - which would come about thirty years later
