The city was founded in 1851 as a small trading post on the north bank of the Willamette River, and grew rapidly during the early 19th century. In 1875, Oregon City became an incorporated town, and in 1912 it became an city. It has since grown into one of the most important cities in Oregon, with a population of over 150,000 people.
Oregon City is a city in Clark County, Oregon, United States. The population was 20,392 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clark County. Oregon City was founded in 1855 by George Wright and named for the state of Oregon. At its peak in 1910, it had a population of 509. By 1920, the population had decreased to 24 and by 1930 it had fallen to 12. However, during World War II, Oregon City began to grow as a result of its proximity to Willamette Valley munitions factories and military bases. In 1945, the city became an official town under the name of "Oregon City Township." The township ceased to exist in 2000 when it merged into Clark County. Oregon City has been home to various businesses such as Jardin Nursery & Seeds (now part of Monsanto), Lumberyard Supply Company (a lumber retailer), Pacific Rim Recreational Equipment (now known as Patagonia) and many other major companies over its history. Today there are few if any businesses remaining that were founded within the original boundaries of Oregon City; many have moved out or been acquired by neighboring cities or counties since then. The first post office opened in 1865 and closed in 1868 due to lack of customers; however, a new post office reopened on July 1st 1870 with mail from Portland going through Albany instead which served as the interim post office until 1888 when Oregon City also received mail from Portland via stagecoach service only- this continued until 1902 when local residents started mailing letters themselves using their homes' doorsteps which ended up being more efficient than waiting forpackages sent through mail carriers like those established prior thereto). Accordingly, on October 2nd 1890 WILLAMETTEVILLE TIMES reported that "the people who live near [the old] postoffice now send all their letters directly from their windows" so "the present business at this place must be conducted largely upon personal correspondence". This letter was written by Wm Henson who resided two blocks east of what is now State Street on land once occupied by Mr John Mapes who built his sawmill along State about two miles westward originally intending for it he put up on adjoining lots which lies between Purdy's house northwest corner First street widthwise across lot number one east longitude wise line running thence southwesterly along said lot number one line lengthwise unto lot number three whereon Rufus Farnsworth located his sawmill building erected February 15th 1892 after he bought same Lots No 7018 northwesterly thereof bounded northerly by Second street widthwise thence easterly by Third street breadthwise thence westerley along said Third street line northerly bisected thereby remaindering southeast corner thereof extending thence southerly along said line northerlly bisected thereby lying within Lot Number 4705 southwesterly thereof bounded southwest corner thereof extending thence easterLY Along said Line Northerbly Bisected thereby arising northeast corner thereof lying within Lot Number 6407
