Oregon City is a city in the U.S. state of Oregon, located on the Willamette River at the confluence of the Columbia and Deschutes rivers. The population was 29,524 as of 2015. It is part of the Salem-Keizer, OR Metropolitan Statistical Area. Oregon City was founded by prospectors in 1847 after they discovered gold nearby in what is now California's Siskiyou County. The town grew rapidly thanks to its location on a trade route between Portland and Sacramento, and its access to water resources that made it an important commercial center for early Oregon Territory. In 1862, Oregon City became the capital of Provisional State of Oregon following the completion of a Union Pacific Railroad line from Portland to Eugene. Oregon City experienced significant growth during World War II when thousands of military personnel were stationed there for various military missions such as aiding in the Invasion of Japan or providing support for troops fighting in European theater wars such as Operation Overlord. The post-war years saw steady growth until 1984 when rapid economic development caused pollution and other environmental problems that led to a decline in population and property values over time. That same year saw passage of Proposition 65 which banned most consumer products with high levels of toxic chemicals from being sold within 500 feet (150 m)of any school or playground

Oregon City is a city in the U.S. state of Oregon, located on the Willamette River. The population was 17,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salem metropolitan area and is one of two cities in Oregon (the other being Portland) served by the Metropolitan Commission for Planning. The first permanent settler in what became Oregon City was John Cushing, who arrived in 1847 from Illinois. He founded a trading post on shoreline near present-day Columbia River Boulevard and Broadway Street and named it Cushing Landing after his father-in-law, David Laney. In 1850, James Wickersham platted what would become Oregon City on land he had bought from Laney. Wickersham named it after General George Armstrong Custer during the American Civil War because he thought Pacific Northwest veterans would be interested in its location near battle sites where their country had fought against Mexican forces. Oregon City's early years were difficult due to lack of water supplies and transportation options; however, it soon developed into an important commercial center for southern Oregon with its own newspapers, university, schools and businesses. In 1888, following annexation by Salem, Oregon City became one of the first cities in America to have its own police department; this helped make it an attractive place for residents to raise children and commute to larger cities such as Salem or Portland for work or education. The city's rich cultural history includes its role as home to both The Beatles (who played at Rose Quarter Stadium before moving to Liverpool) and The Kinks (whose live performances at University Hall rocked the local community). Oregon City was founded on February 3, 1892 by the United States government as a rail town in the Willamette Valley. It grew rapidly and quickly became a major city with its own hospital, school system, police department, and other civic institutions. The population of Oregon City reached 350 in 1905 and soon surpassed 1,000. The city hosted the first international Expo in 1916 and continued to grow until it reached its peak in the 1940s when it had a population of 5,500. After declining fortunes during the postwar years and an economic recession in the 1960s, Portland took over as Oregon City's main commercial center. The city experienced another growth period during the 1980s but ended due to demographic changes and social unrest that led to its downfall.
