The history ofOntario, Oregon began with the arrival of American pioneers in 1847. The area that is now Ontario was part of the Mexican territory of Baja California. The Americans were able to purchase this land from Mexico in 1848 and founded a rancho called Rancho San Francisco de Asís on the site of present-day Albany, Oregon. In 1850, the United States acquired what is now California through the process of annexation and in 1853, Californians became residents of Oregon when that state was created from parts of Nevada and Arizona. The first settlers in what is now Ontario were farmers who arrived during the Gold Rush period in 1849. By 1860, there were over 100 people living in what is today Ontario. Many came from southern Illinois because it had been promised to them as part of the Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended America’s Mexican War. The treaty ceded lands east of the Rocky Mountains to Mexico but left intact western Oregon and eastern Idaho (now Wyoming). Canadian colonists soon began arriving in numbers to work on these new farms and by 1870, there were more than 1,500 people living in Ontario Township. In 1872, a group led by Denton Lyle bought 2,000 acres (8 km2) surrounding present-day Albany for $5 per acre and started building a new town on the site – first known as Black Hawk Town after an Australian aboriginal chief who had visited Canada earlier that year. Lyle named his town after General George Armstrong Custer who died at Little Bighorn during cavalry combat near Sacramento Valley National Monument on October 25th,1876
