Oregon became a U.S. state on September 15, 1859; Multnomah County was created from portions of Clackamas County and Multnomah County became part of Salem Township on November 3, 1861. On February 14, 1872, Eastern Oregon Railway Company merged with the Northern Pacific Railroad to form the Central Pacific Railroad system; this made Oregon one of three states that shares trackage with California (the others being Nevada and Arizona). In 1907, Multnomah County approved annexation by Seattle, making it one of Northwest's most populous cities. The city's growth slowed after World War II; however it has experienced an increase in recent years due to suburban development around the University District and South Park area
