The population was 25,814 as of 2010, making it the largest city in Multnomah County and one of the most populous cities in Oregon. Newberg is an unincorporated community located in Clackamas County, Oregon, United States. It lies on the Pacific Ocean and is surrounded by the nearby towns of Seaside and Corvallis. The population was 915 at the 2010 census. It was named after a Swedish scientist, Olof Newberg, who first explored this area in 1859-60 while exploring the Gulf of Mexico as part of his scientific expedition. Newberg's discoveries included a new type of petroleum oil that he named "northern crude." He also discovered salt water solutions that could be used to produce fuel for ships. In 1886, he became the first person to find coal gas in Oregon waters when he detonated a mine methane gas blast off the coast of Vancouver Island. The town was platted in 1903 by Jens Jensen and George Henson with help from Portland banker Alfred Hauser. The name Newberg originated with Jens Jensen's father-in-law Ole Christensen who had asked him to choose a place name for their family home on the Columbia River where they would spend summers vacationing before moving upriver to start their own business ventures in 1910. Christensen would continue to house people living within earshot of his store until 1951 when it burned down and all its contents were destroyed including furniture, art pieces and memorabilia from many years worth of customers! Oregon State Route 97 skirts around its eastern edge just beyond where it intersects Interstate 5: outside most resident attention falls on state route 97 which runs concurrently through unpopulated forestlands separating Wallowa County from Clackamas County; both counties contain Eugene (the largest city) as well as smaller communities such as Gresham, Medford and Astoria while Blaine - an incorporated municipality located adjacent to SeaTac Airport - contains only one small village situated near SR 97’s southern terminus east of milepost 446.- With few exceptions being rural woodlands bordered by long stretches of coastline or ocean - much like much coastal Oregon mainland - much recent development takes place along I-5 corridors bisecting these once largely agricultural/rural counties; this is especially true along SR 97 corridor between Gresham – now known as “East Gresham” – inland about midway between Salem – formerly “West Salem” – inland about midway between Coos Bay (Coulee City) northwest about midway between McMinnville (McMinnville) northeast about halfway between Scappoose (Scappoose) southeast corner approximately at milepost 611 east from I-5 junction withSR 99 then continuing southwest corner approximately at milepost 655 south from I-5 junction withSR 97

Newberg, Oregon was founded on April 20, 1847 by James W. Newberg and his wife Lucy. The town was named for the new county in which it was located - Multnomah County - and is located about 25 miles east of Salem. The Newberg area had been settled by pioneer families since the 1850s. In 1872, a group of businessmen from Salem pooled their money to purchase 124 acres (49 ha) of land in what is now Newberg. This land was donated by Capt. William Bowerman and his family, who also donated an acre (0.30 ha) to each settler in their home territory when they first arrived in Oregon. The first post office at Newberg opened on February 17, 1868, and remained open until it closed on December 1, 1968. At that time, there were only a few dwellings and no businesses in the town center; most people worked out of their homes or drove to neighboring towns for necessary supplies or services. In 1905, the Portland-based Northern Pacific Railroad erected a railroad crossing over Interstate 5 near present day Newberg; this allowed goods to be transported directly from Vancouver downriver toPortland without having to go through Salem or Portland
Newberg was founded in 1851 by Democrat John Newberg and his brother, Ebenezer. The town served as the capital of Oregon until 1857. Newberg became a county seat in 1871. In 1977, the towns of Happy Valley and Newberg merged to form one municipality.
