Newberg, Oregon is a town in southeastern Oregon, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bend–Salem–Fremont city metropolitan area. The name Newberg comes from the word "ben," meaning "settlement" and "noggin," meaning head or top. The first people to live in what is now Newberg were Native Americans who hunted game in the area. In 1853, John Wesley Powell and his party explored the Snake River Valley and encountered the First American landing on Trail of Tears near present-day Bend, Oregon. When they got there, they named their new discovery Independence Rock for President James K. Polk because it was then within U.S. territory but not yet claimed by the United States as part of Arizona Territory (). In 1857, following these initial explorations and discoveries by land grantees such as George Hennepin (), post office activity began with mail being sent from Ralston Creek west to Portland via stagecoach service until 1865 when a wagon train became available for shipment wagons overland to Portland via State Road 20 (). In 1865 (the same year Congress created Provisional Government of Oregon), Newberg residents voted to incorporation into Benton County (). This event marked an early step in developing what would become Newberg as a vibrant community with its own government and schools; it remained so until 1903 when it merged with nearby Salem to form what is today known as Bend–Salem–Fremont (BSF) city government
