Milwaukie, Oregon is a city in Columbia County, Oregon. It was founded on July 1, 1887 by the merger of two small towns - Milwaukie and Olympia. The city has a population of over 160,000 people. The history of Milwaukie dates back to 1887 when two small towns amalgamated to form one large town. Today's Milwaukie is the largest city in Columbia County and it anchors the eastern edge of the Willamette Valley region. Milwaukie was named for General George Washington Milwaukesey who fought in the Mexican-American War and was then an officer with the United States Cavalry Regiment which served under General John Custer during his campaigns against Sioux Indians in Dakota Territory (now South Dakota). After Custer's death at Little Bighorn on April 6, 1885 General George Washington Milwaukesey took command of his regiment and led them to victory over Native American forces at Bull Run on October 15, 1885. In 1886 Congress passed a law providing for an incorporation of all localities within Columbia County into one municipality - this became effective November 1, 1886 when Milwaukie incorporated as a village. The first post office in Milwaukie opened on December 9, 1888. The name change from Olympia to Milwaukie occurred on January 1st, 1889 when all villages within Columbia County changed their names to commemorate members of Congress who had traveled throughout the county giving speeches about its importance during their visits. On February 24th 1893 Mayor Atherton erected a granite monument dedicated to citizens of Olympia who had laid the cornerstone that day. The first public school opened in Homestead Park located east of downtownMilwuakee September 5th 1902 after $1 000 was raised by citizens through bake sales and auctions held throughout town
