Milwaukie, Oregon is a city in Multnomah County, Oregon, United States. The population was 37,824 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Multnomah County and the largest city in Oregon by area. It is located on the Willamette River within the Portland metropolitan area. The town of Milwaukie was founded in 1845 by John C. Fremont and named for his home state of New York. The townsite was surveyed in 1846 by James Bridgman and named for General David Dixon Milwaukie who had helped lead American forces during the Mexican-American War. In 1863, Milwaukie became part of Deschutes County when it was created from parts of Tillamook and Josephine Counties. In 1872, William McKinley appointed Jens Rasmussen as first postmaster general for Oregon which made Milwaukie one of the first post offices in that state administered by a federal government official. The community grew rapidly due to its location on the main transportation artery between Portland and Seattle (the only time an overland route crossed through central Oregon). By 1890, there were more than 200 businesses operating in Milwaukie with a population of 19,000 people; at this point it became one ofPortland's most important commercial districts.
