Milwaukie’s history begins with its origins as a trading post on the Milwaukie River. Captain James W. Hargrave built his fort here in 1847 to serve as an eastern outpost for settlers moving west from California. After two years of construction, Hargrave named his new settlement “Milwaukie” after his home state of Maine. The first permanent residents arrived at Milwaukie in January 1849, including many farmers and their families who had come south to escape winter back at home. By 1861, Milwaukee had become one of the most important towns in Oregon because it lay along bothOregon Trail and Pacific Railroad routes essential for shipments of goods northward into Washington Territory. During World War II, Milwaukie served as a military base housing tens of thousands of troops stationed throughout western Oregon and northern California before being evacuated during the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. Since then, much has changed at Milwaukee – including efforts underway to revitalize downtown areas which have seen mixed success; progress has also been made towards developing new generations of leaders who are committed to making sure that this community remains vibrant and active into tomorrow

Milwaukie experienced significant growth during World War II as the epicenter of what is today known asthe Pacific Northwest munitions industry. Afterward, it has become a largely residential community with a strong commercial presence dating back to its early years as an agricultural center.
