Milwaukie is a small city in the Oregon Country located on the Columbia River. The population was 25,651 at the 2010 census. It is part of Multnomah County and lies adjacent to Portland, Oregon. The name Milwaukie originated from the nearby Wailing Park reservoir which was used for healing purposes by village residents. In 1872, James Hutton purchased additional land east of town and named it "Milwaukie", after his home town of Milnerton, Ontario, Canada. The first post office in Milwaukie was established in 1881. In 1912, the community decided to change its name to honor John Wesley Powell and his exploration of the Snake River Valley which began in 1870. In 1970, Multnomah County acquired all of the remaining unincorporated properties west of Mill Creek Road within present-day Milwaukie limits as part of a larger land acquisition for multi-purpose use within the regional transportation network known then as "The Link". This included 522 acres (200 hectares) bordering Portland along State Route 99W and including what is now downtown Milwaukie; it became known as "Downtown milwaukie". In 1973, an ordinance were passed allowing for a variety of retail businesses to be built near Interstate 5 between Townsend Street and Southeast 82nd Avenue; this area became known as "Downtown shopping center". In 1984, City Beautiful Award Winner Stucco & Stone Company announced their relocation from Vancouver BC to open their new manufacturing plant outside Eugene OR adjacent to downtownMilwaukie.; this led to increased development around Downtown milwaukie with more high-end stores opening up while older businesses continued operations until they too relocated out into newer areas near I-5 south of downtownPortland during 2006 when that area also experienced significant growth due largely to imported Chinese labor making much available commercial real estate available on both sides of I-5 without any local control or ownership other than by developers themselves thereby creating an even greater concentration/ concentration of economic power within a very short distance away from major urban centers with little connection whatsoever between those areas despite attempts at coordination over many years past
The Coast Guard has been providing basic services to the public since 1790. As one of the nation's oldest and most veteran organizations, the Coast Guard has a rich history of giving back to society. In 1978, Congress passed legislation establishing a program called "Gift-Basket Program" which allows individuals or groups (including families) to make donations to selected agencies within 12 months after receiving a gift (excluding any newly created departments or programs). This program is now administered by Department of Homeland security through DHS' Office of Federal Gift Programs.
