The economy of Milwaukie is focused on education and industry with many businesses concentrated around two large universities: Multnomah University and Pacific Northwest University. Milwaukie's history can be traced back to 1882 when Mormon pioneers arrived in what is nowMultnomah County, Oregon from Utah. They named their new settlement after their home country of Sri Lanka – Milwaukie meaning "homesteading place" or "village." The first settler's house was built on land donated by David Waddell and his wife Emma Snively Waddell on December 12th, 1882. By 1886, there were 10 households living in Milwaukie together with three mills run by local farmers for cloth production and transportation across the river to Salem, Oregon for export.
