The post office was established in 1880 and remained open until it closed in 1959. In 1905, a hydroelectric dam was built upstream from Medford and began to power lights along the river's edge; this caused increased development downstream and led to its incorporation as a city later that year. By 1907, there were over 100 businesses operating within its boundaries. The city experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its strategic location near military bases around the Pacific Northwest Region and its ability to produce munitions for American forces fighting on both fronts; by 1945, it had reached a population size of more than 10,000 people.
