Medford, Oregon is a small town located in the Siskiyou Mountains of eastern Oregon. The population was 5,699 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Medford County and its largest city, Medford. The first Europeans to visit what is now Medford were Jedediah Smith and his party in 1811, and he named it after his friend Caleb Medway. In 1836, John C. Frémont explored the Siskiyou Mountains and discovered the local river system; he called it the Rogue River because no one had ever crossed it before him. When he built Fort Humboldt near modern-day Medford in 1847, he named it for John C. Frémont's mentor also named John C. Frémont—a man who had helped him explore America’s west coast. In 1850, General George Atherton founded a post office at present day downtown Medford; this was only one of a series of post offices established throughout Oregon during that decade by Ulysses S. Grant as part of his push to open up western Oregon to settlers. The first permanent settler in what is nowMedford was Elijah Pond in 1851; pond acquired land from Captains William Richardson and James Ketchum on which he erected a cabin and began farming operations around what is today downtown Medford. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in downtownMedford alone; this number ballooned when railroad construction began nearby in 1865 and various stores and businesses opened up along the new railway line: among these was THE WELLER BARN (later known as THE MEADOW HOTEL).
