Mcminnville is a small town in the King County, Washington, United States on the north coast of the Olympic Peninsula. The population was 3,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wenatchee-Tumwater-Chelenexon School District. The name "Mcminnville" was given by George McKenzie in reference to a post he had made on his farm near present-day Mcminnville. McKenzie named his farm after General James A. McDowell who fought in the Mexican–American War and who later became Governor of Oregon Territory. When North Fork Road ran through what is now Mcminnville, wagon roads were needed to bring goods from Seattle to Tacoma and then down to Wenatchee. In 1887 Congress approved a bill creating Wenatchee County and giving it its own courthouse and jail with land grants from various counties within it. The first settler in what is now Mcminnville, John Shearer, arrived in 1892 after traveling all over western Washington looking for a place to build a cabin and start a new life. He bought some land east of present day Mcminnville from Tom Hatfield for $1 per acre (and still owns that property). Shearer's cabin was built on what is now First Avenue south of Main Street; it burned down in 1902 but was rebuilt soon afterward by her brother William Shearer Sr., which remains standing today as Shearer House (also known as "The Herrer House"). In 1904 pioneer Ethel Wilson moved into her cottage on land she had purchased northeast of present day Mcminnville from Chief Joseph Bullock for $2 per year plus feed for his horses. Mrs. Wilson added another cottage (later called "The White House") about two miles northwest of present day Mcminvile before passing away in 1922 due to age or illness; her husband continued living there until his death in 1951. That same year also saw the erection of an old mill adjoining First Avenue NE just east ofpresent day Old Mill Road; this structure still stands today as Oneida Lake Resort & Spa hotel/motel/. In 1912 Pacific Electric Railway completed its line between Wenatchee and Everett via present-day McClellan Falls; this made available much-needed transportation for residents along First Avenue NE between both cities centerline – making shopping and other essential activities much easier than ever before possible! In 1916 local resident Harry Nourse organized what would become known as the Central Washington Federation College which operated outofNourse Hall adjacent toOneida Lake Resort & Spa until 1960 when it closed due to budget constraints! In 1885, Mcminnville was founded by John and Lillie McNaught. The McNaughts were Scottish immigrants who arrived in Oregon during the early 1800s. They set up a small farm near the present-day town of Mcminnville, which they named for their father, Donald McIntyre. The McNaughts started a school in the community and donated land to build a sawmill. In 1907, they opened a grocery store and post office in the community. The McNaughts were influential figures in local politics and served on the town board from 1915 to 1925. After John McNaught died in 1921, his wife Lillie took over running the business until her death in 1955. In 1932, she bequeathed her business to her son, Stewart McNaught, Jr., and he continued to run it until his death in 1984. Stewart McNaught was married three times: first to Nancie Bowers (1922-1931), then to Joan MacDonald (1935-1945), and finally toildy Storer (1950-1964). He is buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Mcminnville. Mcminnville experienced some major growth during World War II when many local farmers joined the military or became refugees due to the war's economy gripping America hard. The community grew rapidly with new housing developments being built as well as businesses such as banks and general stores that thrived because of wartime demand for goodsproduced by local farmers. Many residents also volunteered their time working at various local factories or hospitals aiding Allied troops duringWWII. The first permanent settlement in what is now Oregon was at present-day Mcminnville, on the shores of the Willamette River. The town site had been selected by a group of investors led by John Day, with help from the United States government. The town was founded near where the river emptied into Lake Oswego.
