The Oregon National Guard was organized on December 8, 1885. The first officers were Colonel Edward S. Smith and Lieutenant Colonel George D. Pyle. The present organization has a total of 128 members, including 26 cavalry and artillery troopers. The guard is headquartered at the Oregon State Capitol in Salem. Oregon National Guardsmen have fought in many wars since they were organized, including World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. They are also frequently called to help protect local communities during times of emergency or political upheaval. In 1951, the Oregon National Guard's mascot was a "warthog" named Sloppy Joe because it had been requested by soldiers stationed at Pendleton Army Airfield in southern Oregon as a replacement for an NFL team's mascot which had died years earlier while serving in World War II as part of the United States Air Forces in Europe (USAAF). The national guard has never lost its sense of humor, and there are numerous jokes about everything from military logistics to state Emblem symbols (e.g., "Warthog on point"). One popular statewide joke concerns an Oregonian who posed as a soldier for an assignment overseas but quickly realized that he couldn't speak any English well enough to be effective; so he returned home with his unit's field manual instead! A similar story goes back to when Sloppy Joe first came around: When someone asked where he got his name from, Sloppy Joe replied simply "I don't know - I just started walking!" Oregonians have long enjoyed wearing national guard uniforms and accessories such as badges and hats while out celebrating patriotic holidays or visiting other states' guardsmen units stationed along their borders. There is even a national guard parade down Interstate 5 each year in Portland during Labor Day Weekend!

The Oregon National Guard was organized on November 6, 1887 under the command of Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer. The first unit to be organized in Mcminnville was the 20th Regiment located at 9th and Josephine Streets. The regiment served for two years and then was mustered out on December 1, 1889.
Mcminnville, Oregon is a small town located on the banks of the Willamette River in eastern Oregon. The population was 5,451 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland-Vancouver-Hillsboro, OR Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Mcminnville" comes from two words: Mc and minn. In 1847, A.D., John Fenton erected a log cabin in what is now Mcminnville Township. By 1853, J.Fenton had built a sawmill and grist mill on his homestead near present day Medford street and High Street. The first post office was established in Mcminnville on December 16, 1876. The first store was operated by Wm Purdy and Brothers until about 1865 when it became property of Sigginson & Son (the father of Judge Samuel Sigginson).around 1870 H C White opened a grocery store which remained in business until 1902 under the name "Cascade". Mrs Gertrude Himmelbach started an ice cream parlor in 1903 which continued to operate until 1935 when it was closed due to prohibitionism
