The regiment was organized on December 12, 1861 and served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. On November 15, 1865, the unit disbanded and its members returned to their homes. On December 12, 1861, an ordinance was passed by the Oregon General Assembly authorizing military donation of goods and services to the Union cause. On February 9, 1862, a resolution was passed by the legislature recognizing that donations had been made and ordering those responsible to receive damages for any financial losses suffered as a result. In 1864-1865, three companies of cavalry from Mcminnville served in Bureau of Indian Affairs raids against Confederate leaders at Battle of Donner Pass. These events helped solidify support for United States efforts against slavery throughout Oregon and California. After the war ended on April 6th, 1865, many soldiers from both sides were discharged or exchanged.
