Mcminnville, Oregon is a small town in the Rogue River Valley of central Oregon. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is located about 20 miles (31 km) northeast of Portland and about 15 miles (24 km) east of Salem. The Rogue River valley has been inhabited for over 10,000 years and includes parts of what are now Mcminnville, Mount Hood, and Bend counties. In 1853, John C. Frémont explored the valley and named it for his friend George McAllister. In 1861, George H. Smith established a post office in the area which later became part of Salem. In 1882, Jourdan Wetherbee acquired land in the area that became Mcminnville and built a cabin there on his family’s farmstead called “Mountain Meadows” today known as Wetherbee Cabin Museum. He also founded Wetherbee Station on the Southern Pacific Railroad near present-day West Linn Road and North Fourth Street to provide goods and services to travelers traveling through the region including farmers who used his station to process woolen fabrics into finished items such as clothing or bedding. The first school in Mcminnville was opened by Mrs. Atherton in 1892 using money she had saved from working at her parents’ farm when she was just 8 years old. In 1916 two brothers named Harry Pemberton bought 100 acres (40 ha) of land west of town limits along US 97 between Glenn road and Barton creek for $1 an acre (0·50 sq mi). They began planting crops there after returning from World War I battlefields in France as soldiers; their crops grew so well they decided to keep farming but sold their land back to Harry Pemberton four years later for $2 an acre ($0·68 per sq ft). After selling some additional property they developed what is now called PemberTON Ranch which ran from Barton Creek southward along US 97 past Nowacki Lake before turning east onto mean high ground running parallel to Interstate 5 continuing southeast then turning north onto NE 128th street where it crossed Salmon River before terminating at present day NE 128th Street/Glenn Road intersection forming part of modern day McMinnvilles boundaries traced back gridwise starting at original survey line extending northeasterly 1 mile east of now existing city limits following OR Highway 99 alignment thence easterly 6¼ miles westerly 3 miles southwesterly 9½ miles sulky 4¼ miles due east thereof Toombs Post Office opened Jul 16 1911 From 1906 – 1917 this location served as Headquarters for District #4 under Superintendent James Ewing This rural mail service traveled via stagecoach upriver 7 days each week dropshipping groceries & other supplies dropoff point at intersection with Glenn Rd SE

Wheat production began operations here in 1865 and continues today; other major crops include potatoes (1924), apples (1980), onions (1899), cotton (1983) and corn (1921). Some manufacturing activity has also taken place over the years: a mill operated here until 1967; a flour mill closed down in 1984 but reopened as an agricultural producer; and a cheese plant opened up in 2001. However, most residents are currently employed within farming or related industries: about 60% of residents work within 10 miles of their homes; about 30% commute to jobs outside their hometowns; and only 5% have full-time jobs outside their hometowns. Mcminnville is one of five towns that make up Thetford-Minturn County—a rural county located near Interstate 5 between Portland and Seattle—and it has been home to many residents who have played significant roles in Northwest history: David Sargent served as U.S deputy secretary under Presidents Eisenhower and Kennedy; Samuels Hartman ran for Congress three times (in 1944, 1966, 1990); Jens Christensen headed NPS during much ofthe late 1990s; Tom Noonan is currently president of nearby Hood River Valley National Wildlife Refuge
In 1892, the town of Mcminnville was founded on a tract of land that had been given to John Day by the local Indian tribe. The town was named for General James McDowell, who helped lead the Union army during the American Civil War. The first post office in Mcminnville was established in 1893. In 1905, the Oregon Railway and Navigation Company built a railroad from Portland to McMinnville. The town developed as a agricultural center due to its location at the intersection of two major railroads. In 1912, McMinnville became part of Multnomah County and was renamed for Speaker of the United States House of Representatives Joseph Lane McMinnville.
