The first coffee shop in Mcminnville, Oregon was established in 1907 by Alfred Fenton and his brother-in-law, John H. McNulty. The business was called the Gourmet Coffee Shop and served coffee from a pot on the back porch. Mcminnville is a small town in the U.S. state of Oregon, located on the Deschutes River. The population was 727 at the 2010 census. The name comes from John McNeill, an early settler who built a cabin there in 1872. The first permanent resident of Mcminnville was John McKnight, who arrived in 1872 and platted the town site on 4 July 1876. In 1892, during the statewide Montana Land Rush, many men from Oregon moved to central Oregon to claim land for themselves. One of these men, Alpheus Hickey, bought 1/4 mile (0.16 km) of land east of McKnight's cabin and named it Mcminnville after his home state. In 1923, when America entered World War II as part of its effort to assist Great Britain and France in their war against Nazi Germany, members of the local Armed Forces Industrial Security Unit (AFISU) were stationed at nearby Pendleton Army Airfield; they began erecting a series of fence posts to protect shipment lines coming into and going out of Pendleton airport from German bombers flying overhead. As word spread about this activity, residents got together to form a Town Council to take care of business matters at the airport while AFISU officers looked after things back at town. The first official act by the Town Council was to place a $10 tax upon property owners within limits “to provide necessary funds for protection” during wartime—an event that led to such development as new stores and hotels opening up along Highway 5 around the base camp area; also see: Mcminnville Airport Museum today).
