The Lebanese community in Oregon coalesced around the Agricultural and Manufacturing College (AMC) which was founded in 1906 by American Presbyterian missionaries. In 1962, AMC merged with Multnomah County to form Multnomah County Annexation Corporation; then it became an individual county on January 1st, 1983 following a referendum. Oregon State University has its origins here as Northwest Normal School opened its doors on land donated by philanthropist and rancher Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney in 1885. The school closed in 1916 but reopened as OSU-Portland in 1948 after president Franklin D. Roosevelt approved a $1 million gift from Whitney and his wife Eleanor Roosevelt. On September 25th, 1964 Clyde Fenton became the first African American to be hired as an instructor at OSU-Portland when he took the position of assistant professor of agricultural science and engineering. He would remain at OSU-Portland through until his retirement in 1998 when he succeeded longtime colleague John Waddell as provost and vice chancellor for research at PSU
