By 1890, there were six businesses in Lebanon and residents were voting on a school board which approved building a schoolhouse that year. Mexican settlers arrived in large numbers, and by 1848 there were over 200 residents living in what is now Lebanon. By 1870, the population had grown to 1,500 people. The first store in Lebanon opened in 1872. In 1912, a post office was established at Lebanon and mail service continued until 1959. The population of Lebanon soared during World War I because of the influx of soldiers and their families. In 1917, the town became a military base when the United States purchased land from Mexico for that purpose. After World War I ended, many Americans left Lebanon for different reasons including economic depressed times throughout America; however, some remain in town today as tourists or business owners. Lebanon experienced its most significant event during World War II when it became an airfield used by both Allied and Axis forces during the war effort. During 1944-1945, significant amounts of ammunition were stockpiled here as well as medical supplies needed for troops fighting on two fronts; however due to bombeable explosives planted near airfields like this one during wartime, little remained after the war ended. Today only a few scattered buildings remain from those days – most notably a small chapel located off US Highway 101 south of town which is still used by local churches today as well as hosting events such as weddings and funerals (although services are no longer conducted there).
