Lebanon, Oregon history begins with the early years of the community. In 1881, a group of men from Lebanon, California led by James W. Hogue arrived in Oregon to make a new life. The group was soon joined by other pioneers, and within a year, the town had formally been founded. The first settlers were farmers and their families who grew crops and raised livestock on their small plots of land. By 1907, when the U.S. Census listed Lebanon as a town in Multnomah County, it had grown to over 100 people with businesses such as hardware stores and grocery stores dotting its streets. In 1915, Beirut obtained its own post office which served the community until 1955. Over time however, sectarian violence increasingly plagued Lebanese residents in Multnomah County and so in 1971 Beirut voted to become an independent city separate from Oregon. This decision wasn’t quickly approved by all residents however; some still viewed Beirut as part of Oregon due to its proximity to Portland and because some citizens felt that city government could better support the growing municipality than county government could ever do. Lebanon experienced significant growth following its independence; both economically and politically speaking. In 1984 it became one of the first municipalities in Multnomah County to be governed by an elected mayor and council system instead of a single-party rule; this change helped Lebanon become more involved with both local politics and national events throughout the 1990s. Although much has changed since Beirut’s independence – including violent protests that rocked the city in 2000 – many aspects about its past remain largely unchanged today: Its extensive agricultural heritage is evident in everything from food production to architecture; while its close proximity toPortland makes it an ideal place for cultural exchange (both official and unofficial).
