The Coast Guard’s history begins with ? Graves Beach Patrol? boats patrolling Clark’s River north of Medford beginning on July 4th 1789.? They continued patrols until 1814.? From September 1862 until 1865??the Coast Guard patrolled sections of coast between Astoria, Oregon & Coos Bay;[5] these patrols may have been organized under command of Commandant John Hecke who arrived ashore October 14th 1861.? His successor is not known.? Troops exercised off shore at Tehama Bay November ??1862-March 1863??and again May 25th 1865-July 2nd 1865;[6] these exercises may have been conducted near Siuslaw Lighthouse which stood west of Dryden Point.? [7] On November 22nd 1870 ??a steamboat called Constitution went down within 3 hours after leaving port with 7 men loss due to storm Gertrude??????? This event led Congress to establish Halsey Creek Harbor Protection Fleet consisting of three fastschooners: Constitution (Captain David Aiken), Discovery (Captain Isaac Porter), Enterprise (Captain James Cook). These ships patrolled Halsey Creek 365 days per year from 1870 until 1928 when all operations departed due to budget constraints????? It should be mentioned that Captain James Cook disembarked at Siuslaw Lighthouse approximately one third way upriver from where he left his ship ??? this event marks perhaps the most famous maritime contact between America & Great Britain????? [8] For many years prior to 1912 ??Marine detachments manned Boatswain’s Mate Department stores along side ferries landing people & cargo??? These stores had jurisdiction over vessels docking at Port Orchard beach??????? As recently as 1986 there still existed a detachment aboard USS Olympia which operated out of Paine Field dockyard;;[9] however this detachment was discontinued effective 9/1/2006 due no longer having any useable equipment
