Lake Oswego is a small, freshwater lake located in the Columbia River Gorge region of Oregon. The name was given to the body of water by early American settlers because it looked like aoland, or a deep blue sea. The surrounding rural landscape is characterized by farmlands and hills that line the river valleys. The water's surface area is just over 4 square miles (10 km2). The first Europeans to visit Lake Oswego were fur traders in the early 1800s. They named the body of water after British explorer George Vancouver, who had charted the Strait of Georgia in 1792. In 1825, Mormon missionaries founded an outpost on what is now shoreline east of town. By 1839, most residents had left for good and the fort was abandoned. However, construction on a new settlement started soon afterward and it became known as Oswego City. In 1849, when Oregon statehood was granted to California, Oregon citizens voted to annex part of California into their state; this led to a conflict between Oregonians and Californians over control of the town which eventually ended with both sides signing an agreement recognizingindependence from each other. In 1893-1894, during World War I (1914-1918), Lake Oswego served as an airfield for UH-1Y Hueys used by United States Army Air Forces during Operation Crossroads (August 1944 – May 1945). In 1853, the United States acquired Oregon from Mexico after a costly and often-violent land grant chase. The new nation's first capital was established in Salem, but by 1860 it had moved to Portland when Congress determined that the central location would be more conducive to trade and commerce. In 1864, during the American Civil War, General Ulysses S. Grant occupied Portland and ordered all male citizens of African descent out of the city. This order sparked a series of riots throughout the city that left at least thirty people dead. After the war ended, Portland began to rapidly grow as an agricultural center due to its fertile soil and available water resources. By 1907, there were more than 1,000 businesses in downtown Portland and over 100 miles of streetcar tracks running through town. With its growing population and burgeoning economy, Portland became one of America's most cosmopolitan cities. During World War II,Portland was a major military center because it played a key role in both Allied (USA) and Axis (Hitler's Germany) efforts against each other on Pacific Theater battlefields. Large numbers of civilians were killed or injured in air raids; some estimates place the death toll above 300 thousand people alone. Lake Oswego was founded in 1853 by Captain Lewis and Dr. William J. Marsh as a military reservation on the lower Snake River. In 1855, the United States Congress passed the Land Act of 1850, which created Oregon Territory from parts of California and Nevada. The land that would become Lake Oswego was part of this territory. The first settlers were Mr. and Mrs. John Day, who arrived in 1856 from Illinois via the Oregon Trail. In 1861, the day before Fort Sumter was attacked by Confederate forces at Emancipation Park in Savannah, Georgia, members of the US Army stationed at Fort Vancouver on the Columbia River discovered gold near present-day Olympia. They named it after Washington County seat of Olympia (which they also explored). In 1865, Washington County became a part of Multnomah County when that county was organized out of western Washougal County and eastern Okanogan County. On July 3, 1871, changes to Oregon Territorial Law provided for creation of Yamhill County within Multnomah County; however, no change took effect until December 1st when Yamhill became a full member state in 1907 The town of Lake Oswego began to grow rapidly following its incorporation as a city on November 3rd 1912 with an population size only slightly under 2 thousand people On February 15th 1917 USS "Oklahoma" sank off shore east side Of town displacing 507tons filled with oil & gas not realizing she had sunk till long after swimmers had surfaced to take photos
