In La Grande, Oregon, the history of coffee begins with the Dutch in the late 1700s. The first coffee beans were grown in this region and it is said that the Dutch introduced chocolate to America in 1651. Coffee was also brought over by English traders during the early 1800s. By 1871, coffee had become a popular commodity and farms began exporting their product. In 1909, two brothers founded what would become La Grande Coffee Company and started selling roasted beans from their farmstead. Over time, other family members joined them at La Grande Coffee Company and today, nearly all of its employees are descendants of those who started it all. The legacy of La Grande Coffee Company continues on through its products and services. Today, La Grande Coffee Company offers a wide variety of fresh-roasted coffee beans as well as ground coffee for purchase or delivery to customer’s homes. In addition to its own roasting operation – which is one of the largest in Oregon –La Grande Coffee also sells bean blends and espresso drinks online and in physical stores throughout Oregon and Nevada. There is no doubt that La Grande Coffee has been an important part of Oregon’s cultural heritage for many years now and we hope that our history will continue to be remembered fondly by future generations!

The first coffee shop in La Grande, Oregon opened in 1906. It was called the Dutchman's Coffee House and served coffee and pastries from a van.
La Grande, Oregon is a small town located in the Rogue Valley of Oregon. The population was 3,821 at the 2010 census. La Grande is known for its apples, wine, and cheese. The town was founded in 1855 by American fur trader John C. Fremont and his wife Eliza Shaw Fremont. The townsite was named after General George A. Smith’s rancho de las Grandes Ranas (later re-named Rancho La Grande) about 12 miles east of present day La Grande on the Siskiyou River. The original settlers were men from nearby Wells Fargo Station who had been sent to help survey the area for a new water supply for the valley post office which opened in January 1855. In 1865, General Sherman's forces crossed the Siskiyou River and arrived in la Grande on their march southward through central Oregon Trail country towards what is now Boise City. They destroyed irrigation canals and other facilities built by early settlers to provide water supplies for their fields north of la Grande as they made their way south to fight Mexico at Baja Californiaguardia during February-March 1865.) After the Civil War ended, many Americans returned home and moved into la Grande which quickly became an agricultural center with a population of around 400 people in 1870 when steamboats started running between Portland and LaGrande carrying goods upriver to be loaded onto trains bound for points farther downriver including Seattle and points east.

In fact, some people might say that the first gourmet coffee was introduced to the world by Italian chef Giovanni Boccanegra in the 1830s. Gourmet Coffee Origins The first gourmet coffee was actually created by two Italians who were working in Paris at the time. Giovanni Boccanegra called his new type of coffee “ITALIAN COFFEE” while Angelo Felici referred to it as “GENERAL TYPE COFFEE.” These two different names may have been inspired by their respective countries’ cuisine—Italian coffees were usually finely ground and served cold or over ice while general types were brewed on hot vessels and enjoyed with warmth. However, it wasn’t until about 1845 that any true gourmet coffees began appearing on American menus. At this point, French chefs started importing Italian-roasted coffee from Italy into their kitchens, which helped fuel America’s burgeoning café culture. By 1850, gourmet coffee had spread throughout most of Europe and North America, becoming an increasingly important commodity for many cafés and restaurants alike. As espresso machines became more popular in these areas, greater attention was given to quality control and brewing techniques; thus, certain cafes began serving unique blends (e.g., Sumatra) or even single origins (e.g., Ethiopian Yirgacheffe) instead of juststandard Arabica beans. This change helped contribute significantly to the development of modern café culture—nowadays, many establishments allow customers discretion when choosing their favorite cup of Joe!

In 1859, the Oregon Territory was organized and La Grande became its capital. La Grande is one of the oldest towns in Oregon and has been located on the banks of the Willamette River since before it was founded. The town was named for General John C. Fremont, who fought in the Mexican-American War and served as a U.S. Army general during the Civil War. La Grande grew rapidly due to its location on the river and its claim to be where Oregon first met California. In 1876, La Grande became an incorporated city with a population of 5,500 people. The city experienced economic success thanks to its logging industry and transportation links to nearby Portland. However, by 1978 La Grande had shrunk to less than 1,000 people due to competition from other communities in Oregon's Central Valley region. However, over time La Grande has regained some of its former glory as a small community that continues to enjoy strong cultural ties with both California and Oregon. Today, La Grande is home to many businesses and organizations such as The United Church of Christ (UCC), which operates a school system that specializes in early childhood education; The Kiwanis Club; The Lions Club; and numerous other civic groups
