La Grande is a small town located in the Klamath Mountains of eastern Oregon. The population was 2,391 at the 2010 census. La Grande was founded by Danish immigrants in 1875 as a small community on the banks of the Klamath River. The name was shortened to La Grande in 1907 and it has since been anglicized to Grand Rapids. In October 1875, Danish immigrant Ole Gustavsen organized a group of men and boys to purchase land east of the Siskiyou Mountains for his new community. Gustavsen had come overland from Copenhagen with his family in 1854, and he had become interested in western Oregon after meeting Umatilla Indian Chief Joseph Wheeler near present-day Portland. Gustavsen's group purchased 640 acres (253 hectares) from John Day for $2 per acre ($12 per kilometer). The site would provide enough space for only about fifty people, but they were able to build a limited number of homes and barns before pioneer season began in November 1876. The first businesses opened in La Grande soon after its founding: a store, post office, schoolhouse, blacksmith shop, saw mill, and cattle range. By early 1880, there were also several churches and churcheschools serving the area around Grand Rapids. In 1886, Gustavsen sold his land parcels to other settlers and moved away from La Grande; however, he continued to live nearby until his death in 1911. The early days of La Grande were difficult; construction on the town's few buildings was often marred by bad weather or severe erosion that destroyed many materials used during construction such as bricks and timbers. However, through hard work and determination over time La Grande slowly grew into one of eastern Oregon's most successful towns. In 1920–21 Congress passed an act recognizing Grand Rapids as an incorporated city; this event markedthe beginning of what would be an increasingly successful local economy that continues today . During World War II , many residents took up arms against fascism ; some even became martyrs . Many residents lost their lives during combat or shortly thereafter ; however , many others found success working within local industries or leading roles within their communities .
