Klamath Falls, Oregon is a city in central Oregon and the county seat of Klamath County. The population was 13,549 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Klamath County and one of the fastest-growing cities in Oregon. The first permanent settler in what is now Klamath Falls was named George Washington. He and his family campsed out for three weeks on the banks of the Willamette River when they decided to move forward. The area that became Klamath Falls was first settled by Native Americans, including the Chinook people who called it "Hahwahtse", meaning "place where woodcrafts are made". The United States Geological Survey mapped the area around present-day Klamath Falls on July 10, 1859, as part of a survey of western Oregon Territory. JamesWallace had built a sawmill near present-day Disenchantment Lake while exploring northeastern Oregon for livestock ranchers willing to sell land for irrigation purposes. On October 5, 1860, Wallace sold his interest in the mill to John Crouse for $10 per acre (about $2 million at current prices). In 1881, Crouse donated some land east of town to build Pioneer Cemetery which still stands today. In 1865 local businessman William Thornton bought most of what is now downtown from Crouse's heirs; Thornton renamed it "Thornton" after himself and developed it into an important commercial center with several buildings still standing today including The Old National Bank Building and The First National Bank Building (now occupied by Jamba Juice). Klamath Falls is a small town in the Klamath National Forest, about 25 miles northeast of Portland, Oregon. It was founded in 1875 by John L. Klamath and his family after they discovered gold and silver in the area. The first post office was established in 1876, and the first school was built in 1877. The town became an incorporated city in 1907. In 1969, it merged with nearby Redmond to form Redmond/Klamath Falls. In 1996, the city annexed the adjacent unincorporated community of Dundee. The history of Klamath Falls began with its discovery of gold and silver in the area back over two centuries ago! John L. Klamath found gold and silver on what is now known as Mountain View Hill just east of present-day downtown Klamath Falls. His family soon set up camp around their discoveries while working to assay these metals for sale to other miners or investors interested in exploiting this new land mass that lay within easy access from Portland and other major cities across North America at that time! This early exploration not only yielded valuable minerals but also laid the groundwork for future development here as well! For many years following its initial discovery, Mountain View Hill would be site of weekly mining operations for alluvial (laid down) gold andsilver from nearby hillsides - providing much needed income for those living near by! It wasn't until 1865 that a permanent settlement formed at what is today called Mount Hood Road east of downtown Klamath Falls due to some limited success with prospecting thereabouts! By 1870 however, many people had started arriving here specifically because they believed there might be rich veins right under their feet - believing that “Ganoderma” could be found buried deep inside geologic layers dating back millions of years!! Over ensuing decades various claims were made for ownership or control over portions of this open country including: Bendigo Township (1872), Dundee Township (1896), Everson Township (1911), Lyndhurst Township (1924), Mount Hood Road East(1969) & Redmond/Klamath Falls City annexation 1974!!! However no one ever officially claimed full ownership or stewardship over this vast acreage until 1912 when George Wickersham finally purchased it from local ranchers – making him & his descendants perpetual owners thereof!!! subsequently selling off parcels which eventually comprise present day Mt Hood Rd., Everson Rd., Dundee Rd., Lyndhurst Rd., Mount Hood East.. These days most everyone living within blocks radius either knows someone who has property here OR has visited during recent holidays or events!! As such our rich past comes alive each year when citizens step out into Main Street square to enjoymarket produce baskets filled with local goods!! And YES – even kids THESE DAYS are taught about how important it is to have roots going back centuries!!!
The first European to visit the Klamath Falls area was Captain John Astley in 1825. The first permanent settler in the area was James Irvine in 1836. A post office called Klamath Falls had been established in 1846, but it never received any mail. In 1880, the Oregon General Assembly granted land to the town of Klamath Falls on the north side of the Klickitat River for a new county seat. The town was incorporated on December 25, 1890. The population of Klamath Falls grew rapidly from its initial handful of residents to over 3,000 by 1900. By 1910, most of what is now southern Oregon had been annexed by Washington County and Klamath Falls became part of that county. However, the city continued to grow and become one of Oregon's largest cities by 1920 with a population over 10,000 people. In 1938, when Multnomah County was created from portions of Washington and Multnomah counties, Klamath Falls became part of that new county as well.
